Wii outselling PS3 and Xbox 360 combined in North AmericaDVDBack23 @ Jun 16, 2007 17:16 | 50 comments According to the latest NPD sales figures, the Nintendo Wii continues to dominate the North American market, with Nintendo selling more consoles than both Sony and Microsoft combined.
During the month of May, 338,000 Wii consoles were sold, compared to 155,000 Xbox 360s and only 82,000 PlayStation 3s. The Nintendo DS did even better, moving 423,000 units during the month. The Sony gaming handheld, PSP, sold 221,000 units mainly thanks to a recent price cut. The PlayStation 2 continued to sell well, pushing 188,000 units for the month.
Overall, console sales rose 79 percent during the month to hit $221 million USD.

Quote: Also, don't forget that "next gen" does not only imply better graphics. There are imrovments in A.I., the number of items on screen at once, and sound processing for example. I have a 360 and a Wii. I have said before that Wii games generally look dated when compared to the other systems. With the typical lifespan of a system being 4-5 years, the games will look positively retro in 3-4 years. IMO this demonstrates a lack of forward thinking by this company. No support for HD resolution? After playing the 360 in 1080p I absolutely appreciate that crispness. Another example is the sound processing of the Wii, i.e. no surround sound only psuedo-surround with dolby PLxII. I'm not Wii bashing, I love the system. However, I think Nintendo could have done a bit more to make the gaming experience more immersive and improve the longevity of the console. |

It is the direction gaming needs to go. Maybe the PS5 or the XBOX 1080 will be controlled by body movement and seen through VR headsets. Button mashing is so "NES track & field". |

Comment by: ChiknLitl (Jun 19, 2007 09:26) Quote: Damn Zippy. That's harsh. My point was not only crisper visuals but also the power to render more items onscreen at once, better sound, more colors, etc. These things, as well as the new interface scheme, would provide a more interactive experience. Cripes! I had a $30 graphics card in my old computer that could output 1360x768 resolution with anti-aliasing and all the bells and whistles. I think the Wii HAS the power for HD visuals but the designers did not give us the option to use that setting. Therefore, that implies to me a lack of forethought. Also, given that new HD sets are the fastest growing segment of the consumer electronics market, not to mention that in 2009 all new sets will be required to have digital tuners, I'm sure I'm not the only person wishing the Wii had a higher output resolution. Sure, in 5 years I will need to upgrade some gear but then there will be a new Wii by then, won't there?

There's no sense to wait 5 years just to buy a new HDTV since it will again be outdated 5 to 10 years down the road. If it's not improvements in resolution it's better contrast ratios, better color depth or color reproduction, etc.

Comment by: Riotard (Jun 21, 2007 17:33) Heck, my mate has a wii, we play that whenever i go over hsi hosue or when hye comes to mine, 360 is for more solo gaming with its amazing onlien playing. Wii is the usual nintendo aimed game consol for evryoen to ahev a great time, heck i still play my N64! and not my ps1 because N64 is multi player with 4 controllers!

Comment by: borhan9 (Jun 21, 2007 20:53) I went and priced all consoles yesterday and they need to at least cut the price of the ps3 by 50% and the Wii by $100 and then i will really want to purchase the Nintendo Wii. |
