Nintendo America boss speaks about Microsoft and Sony

DVDBack23 @ May 29, 2007 09:06 | 92 comments

Nintendo America boss George Harrison took some time to talk about his competitors and how he feels they dont understand the gaming market. Harrison believes Sony and Microsoft lack the "DNA" necessary to understand the market, one he feels wants a more rewarding gaming experience than "just the next version of Halo or Grand Theft Auto."

"So far they haven't spent a lot of time focused on us. Now that we're having some success, they probably will," commented Harrison to Wired.

"We can already see some of the things they've tried. For last year's E3, at the last minute, Sony rushed out their Sixaxis controller as an effort to respond to the Wii remote. We saw Microsoft roll out Viva Piņata as their killer app for the Pokemon set. And neither of those worked really well.

"Part of this is, I think it's not in their DNA. They're really good at reaching a certain customer, and have a real difficulty understanding how we succeed with the customers that we have," said the senior vice president of marketing and communications.

So far the Wii and DS consoles have dominated sales and Harrison said he felt confident that Nintendo could take as large as a 50 percent market share for the "next gen" lineup of consoles.

"We also have a belief that we can be, of this lifecycle, 40-45 per cent of the hardware that's being sold. But on the other hand, we could get over 50 per cent. And a lot of that depends on what our competitors do," he stated.

"If they only focus on the Grand Theft Autos and the Halos and things of that nature, they're focusing on a very tiny part of the market. The overall market is growing so dramatically that they're going to miss out on the opportunities that we're seeing in the expanded audience," he added.

Those are very strong beliefs by Mr Harrsion and I hope to see Microsoft and Sony respond to this latest war of words.

Exactly, best post here thus far. :)

hm so i have no say for the 360 as the person who owns it will not share >(.

the wii is fun - period. if you've got friends, the novelty will never wear out. i rarely play when by myself unless i wanna throw myself into zelda and it's sometimes fun to master wii play and wii sports. my non-gamer brother loves the TMNT game though. he's hooked the wii into his plasma these days and doesn't stop for hours. games like, again, wii sports and wii play and monkey ball rock for kids...though monkey ball is kinda hard for especially young ones. we've downloaded the classic marios and the sims to play on the wii and it's nostalgic, lemme tell ya. it's an all around social console. pretty awesome. can't wait to play mario party 8 this weekend. and as a bonus, it's pretty mobile, easily moved from place to place.

now, the ps3 failed to impress me (plus as someone's pointed out, it resembles a certain hamburger grill.) yea, it's badass graphics wise, but if you don't have an hd tv and you aren't prepared to shell out money for blu rays (which are usually $10 to $20 more than regular dvds), then eh, don't waste your money. even if you are, the game selection isn't too hot right now with the only game i'm interested in being final fantasy XIII (<---excitement!!!!). the ps2 games that are compatible are slightly pixelated, but that'll happen on any hd tv anyway...i think. the loading time doesn't seem to be any faster...maybe a little bit. i don't play with it much. it really just sits there. the wireless control is the same old control, nothing new there. and i haven't tried out the internet capabilities of the ps3 yet.

anywho, hope it helps. i'm really not biased against the ps3 except for being very disappointed in it. but eh, whatever.

lol nintendo wii is more powerful than ps3 and 360??? hahahaha its selling more, yes. but its by far the weakest of the 3 from a technologically point of view.

and wii's graphics are the crappiest next gen graphics ive ever seen

nintendo is the greatest for giving us the wii i think that it is so original.and the controll is perfectand paper mario is better than Gears of War and fall of man.so nintendo fanboys iam on your side.and dont listen when they say our beloved console is game cube ver 1.5 i mean who want power and great looking games who needs that when you can jump around with your wiimot.now thats fun.and just know this the wii is for the whole family to enjoy not just you.becaues the 360 and the ps3 is to high end for most people to understand the concept.

Sorry Mario is not that good Sunshine was off balanced and Galaxey seems to have "quirks" of its own I'll save great for Mario when they can bring SM3 or SMW to 3d without screwing over the power ups and forms.

Gears is good but missing something maybe I just not have played enough maybe I have gone insane it seems most new games are missing a bit of something something .....

- SV1000? Very nice bike.

Couldn't agree more btw, my own 1100R is a zillion times better than any games console.

What an insightful statement from somebody who understands proper sentences, you know that end in periods and start with capital letters? Oops I guess us slugs aren't able to understand, my bad.

i'd have to say the average brains of wii owners i know are less developed in the technical area, i.e. knowledge or care of computers past having one and using it. not saying all are this way, but a majority leans that way. dont give me shit for saying that, its just from what i've collected from those around me, and i'm not pointing fingers.

you point being?
Graphics and physics mean shit if a game is not fun or well designed and gameplay itself has been rotting for almost 10 years with little movement to evolve it, the WII gives a chance to sit back and relax on thos 2 fronts and work on the core of a game.

the WII is mroe than strong enough to run most games with lil damage to physics its not that far off from the 360 for Christ sakes....

"If these are the type of games that become blockbusters, then you can count on other gaming companies who cater to the more hardcore gamer--aka me and the milions of others who've been driving this business--to promptly change direction."

I so love that I am sorry but todays hardcore gamer is the backbone of the horde of zombie casual gamers they lap up anythign the industry tosses at them and only seem to complain about weak graphics...well guess what I am sick of weak unpolished GAMES!
50$ mediocre games are BS the industry I wish gamers would wake up and stop being mezmorized by the "oooo shiny" petty look.

you are acting like there are no good games in the "hardcore" buyers depot. there are plenty. do you see how many wii minigames there are? over 401. there no story or plot or anything interesting besided hopping in and out. that doesnt appeal to me. this crowd moving into the gaming space doesnt seem to care for indepth story or realism, the just wanna cook or something, flicking and twitching around. how realisting is flicking? the wii needs to polish the control use.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

the trouble is gaming has already been "mainstreamed" not by "interactive" mini games but by unpolished brandizing *slings poo at you A.K.A Shadowrun*, also the main reason why the mini game effect dose not have wings without the dual motion controllers of the WII its pointless thus can not move beyond it.

There are a few good games but too damn many are unpolished and unfinished.

Comment by: Unfocused (Jun 28, 2007 02:57)

Nintendo has always been about fun. They are just staying true to what made them who they are today.

Comment by: anubis66 (Jun 28, 2007 11:43)

they are about themelves, with a guise of fun.

But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because you're so busy going from a to z, that there's 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...
