Revamped PSP coming soon?

DVDBack23 @ May 19, 2007 22:48 | 21 comments

According to the gaming blog Kotaku, Colin Sebastian, a top analyst at Lazard Capital Markets, has told investors that a new revamped, redesigned PSP is on its way by the end of the year.

Sebastian told industry website Next Gen that his sources confirmed Sony “definitely has something in the works” but then got more vague and didnt elaborate further.

Sony recently dropped the prices on the PSP so consumers shouldnt expect this new PSP for at least a few months but if it is coming it will certainly be here before the Christmas rush.

Hopefully they fix my only real issue with the PSP which is the way certain games play with the controls on the PSP. Like playing Street fighter, you can barely get moves out that is so easy on the PS2. Some games arent worth playing due to that in my opinion but overall the PSP is the shiznit.

I Think Sony is doing this more to bridge the gap from Nintendo's version.

I dont think Sony is doing this to bridge the gap because i think the PSP is a better product but where they losing it at is games made. Its hard to sell games for the PSP when you got the same games for the PS2, PS3, or even 360. Nintendo has standalone games that were already on their systems from before so all they have to do is re-create them and put it on a portable system and people will buy it. Thats where Sony is really lacking verse the DS. The DS graphic quality sucks in my opinion. Its really hard to beat when you got Mario, Zelda, and a few other main titles thats always been Nintendo's bread in butter.

i dont think that u can get good graphics on a portable or at least for another couple of years but they need to make one as big as a cd round abouts i would love to have a handheld like that

Comment by: spydah (May 20, 2007 12:39)

I think the PSP graphics are nice and way better then DS. Its just lacking replay value with out having a game to be the face of the system.

they should put another analog stick and make an analog addon for the regular psp...that would be cool :D

Comment by: OMEGASA (May 20, 2007 13:46)

if they added a right analog stick they could open up a huge new market for new games

Comment by: Moomoo2 (May 20, 2007 14:20)

In my humble opinion, the new PSP needs a second analog stick and a redesigned D pad that works correctly, as the current D pad is terrible with diagonals.

I would like the PSP to have a built in hard drive option though. That'd be neat.

like a premium and a core model like the amazing xbox 360

Comment by: anubis66 (May 20, 2007 15:30)

yeah, not including a right analog stick was the dumbest idea that really held the psp back.

SOny dosent have a clue how to work the portable game....
games first then price knock 80 off the PSP price then start porting all the PSX games you can to it or make it more profitable to devs to make games to it...the PSP is more a PDMP(personal data and media player) once you go threw the trouble of hacking it...

from the PSP to the PS3 "bigger" is not always better, sure the product sales but at that price and with the lack of games its not worth everyones time or money.

I hope the next PSP will have both analong nubs so it can be a system thats easily ported to so you can keep most main gameplay aspect, watering already bad gameplay down minus a few buttons can kill a game..

I dont think its that. The D-pad and missing second analog stick is the only real issues. They dont have franchise titles like Nintendo. Its hard to just keep porting games over that 90 - 95% of people already have on the main consoles and make them sell. Sega had Sonic Nintendo got Mario, Zelda, Metroid and even Atari had Pac-Man. The PSP needs some orginal games made for its system that will last. Instead of just trying to port every main consoles games over.

Ya ya you are right I tend to cling to gameplay issues, that aside they did not try anythign with the price they did not effectively deal with porting games to do and preping it to be a solid handheld system they kinda hacked it together around UMD and stopped thinking past that...I hope they do not do the same with the PS3....

What of Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops? Or Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters? SOCOM? These aren't ports but indeed new entries in existing franchises, much like the new Mario game on DS or whatnot.

And I have to say, Lumines + Lumines II are incredibly addicting.

Moomoo2,

I agree with the games you mentioned but i dont like the way Metal Gear moves on the PSP and so far i have never played or really heard anybody talk about Ratchet. I do like Socom and i never played or heard anyone talk about Lumines. Besides Metal Gear and Socom as recognizable named games they still dont make the PSP sell. What point i was trying to make in my last post is when you think of Nintendo you instantly think of Mario, Zelda, or Metroid and as matter fact Tetris too. Sega Sonic the hedgehog. Atari Pac-Man, Asteroids and etc.... I am not hating on Sony because I like their products but they have not pushed a face for their handheld like Nintendo. There really arent many games that makes you want to say I gotta get me a PSP for that game. I like some of the games its just nothing that really holds you to being hooked.

Wouldn't having Dual Analog sticks throw off the weight and yield an uncomfortable holding position?

The real issue that Sony needs to tackle isn't graphics, but overall fun factor. Hell, the original Game Boy was in grey scale, but that was fun. Nobody cared or complained about lack of color.

The Game Gear solved the color issue, but that little sucker ate up some batteries.

Go back to why people started playing games to begin with, and the customers will come back to them

I dont think the dual analog would effect the comfort of the way its held it they make it right. It really shouldnt be that far off from the PS dual analog controller. Not saying the weight wouldnt be a factor but if do it right it should be good. Also yes the fun factor is very important. All game companies are lacking the fun factor in a great majority of their games. So if Sony plays their cards right and make a better way to play games on the PSP the revamping should be great for all PSP lovers.

considering how lite and small the nub is the redesign would not take much if anything it would add a few MMs to the side.
