New PlayStation due within 18 months?DVDBack23 @ May 03, 2007 23:51 | 23 comments
The console will not be entirely new, say the sources, and will include the same architecture as the PS3 with the exception of a new bay drive and attachment area. The new console however, will include an extensive media center software suite for managing content being streamed to a TV or Hi Fi source.
It would seem that the new updates will try to convert the PS3 to a home entertainment hub from a gaming machine. “We have even looked at a Sony home server based on PlayStation technology. This would allow consumers to connect home automation devices to the Sony server while also delivering online gaming and access to an extensive movie and music library,” said one Sony source.
Based on these sources, and the industry shift into home entertainment space, it seems very possible that a new PlayStation console (not a PlayStation 4) is in the works.
Although it never made it out of Japan, Sony Corp. released a similar product in 2003 called the PSX. The PSX was a home entertainment center based on the PS2 hardware and also included DVD recordable functionality. Sales were poor.

Comment by: spydah (May 04, 2007 09:00) Omg this is another funny article yall get worked up off anything. If they said they was making a PS3 with a built in tv and wheels at the bottom i think some of yall would commit suicide off that article lmao. |
Comment by: spydah (May 04, 2007 09:15) Also like someone already said what real advantage would this have for Sony. They really dont need to sell you a PS3 with a bigger Hard drive you can do that your self. Not like going to up the processor or swap the motherboard for a better one. The only logical thing i can see them doing is making custom PS3 in different colors. But for right now this article doesnt sound like its much truth in it at all. On top of that they currently dont have hardware issues like the 360. Just system cost and better games needed for the future which happen soon enough. |

Comment by: WierdName (May 04, 2007 18:48) This whole thing is just here-say if its not an official statement from Sony. Also, anyone ever think of how ironic it is that Sony and Microsoft fight each other out viciously in the game market yet Sony uses Windows on their PCs? And I should probably state that that was not a fanboy comment because some idiot will probably flip out over it *rolls eyes*. |
Comment by: borhan9 (May 04, 2007 19:55) The ps3 just came out and they are already talking about the next one plus another 2 in another article posted earlier. I think ill just wait for ps6 to make it and then think about getting that one. |

And since when did M$ come out with a different version of the 360? Lmao it's just a different colour with a bigger HDD. On the plus side though, black does make the "Ring of Death" look a lot nicer :P |
Comment by: johnjh (May 04, 2007 21:10) Quite frankly, all this wasted bandwidth over Sonys 'anticipated' release of a new playstation is laughable. So, your the manager of the division that developed the PS3 and after all the hoops you had to go through to get it out, your boss asks you, "Now what are you going to do for me lately?" Sound cruel - you bet...thats business...and given the reality that Sony loses about $300 on each PS3 they sell, and are ditching the 20 GB version they need something to try and make money. The PS 3 is many years away from break even, the xbox is closer, but that is only because they got over a year head start. Fact is, Nintendo is the only game box that actually makes the company money! And they do it because it is their only business. So now Sony looks around and sees a niche in which it can move the PS3 platform - and it is kinda smart. The Media Center PC is a pain in the ass to work with...it suffers all the problems of any MS product, and one can fairly easily put linux on the PS3 and have a hell of a 'PC'. I've done that, even 'copied' games and added a 500 GB HD. So, given the PS3 is roughly 3 times the performance of where PCs are currently, it make perfect sense to bolster its capability to include more 'home entertainment' goodies. Provided Sony does not screw it up like MS. And provided they don't make everything Sony propriatiary...Which if they follow the PS3 lead, they won't. I'd like to see where they take it. And 18 months is about average life of a consumer product.. I think the key will be to make the new product compatable with the PS3 games. So, in summary, have at it Sony, but just don't dump it like you did the Clie!... |
