Online retailers drop Xbox 360 Core unit price

Dela @ Feb 21, 2007 21:14 | 6 comments

Just a day after UK retailer Makro dropped £80 off the price of the Xbox 360 Premium console, several online retailers have cut up to £50 from the price of the Core version of the console. Play.com has cut a quarter of the price of the console, sealing it for £149.99 instead of the RRP of £199.99. Microsoft has made no official price cut for the Xbox 360 consoles.

Rival retailer, Amazon.co.uk, has also dropped the price of the Core unit slightly, down to £189.99 from the RRP. Amazon is also selling Sony's PlayStation Portable (PSP) console for £109, £40 less than the RRP. Rumors of an official Microsoft price cut for the Xbox 360 circulated recently, naming the PS3 launch as a time frame for an announced.

Microsoft is also expected to unveil a black Xbox 360 around the time of the European PS3 launch.

the 360 is getting a new revision so the older versions are kinda pointless when 10-30% are broken....

I keep seeing the core unit is either going or being cut in price by a very large margin, the current premium will become priced around where the core is right not and the 'media version' is due around May 1st with 120gb HDD, the cool 65nm processor, the quiet drive and HDMI (which I couln't really care less about) at a price around where the current premium is.....and it'll be black.

I'm glad to see more black stuff coming out, I can't stand the fad for silver a/v gear and I didn't like the white......I just wish they'd pack it in with the silly shapes now so that stuff can be stacked properly under or around the TV.

The media version (if the rumoured spec/price is true) could be very tempting....IPTV looks an interesting development too

- This is the $64,000 question zippy.

As you know I'm sure Microsoft won't comment on anything except an official announcement and as there hasn't been one of those all we can do is pick up the rumours and make a best guesstimate on what we do know.

We already know the faster quiet XBox 360 internal DVD drive has recently gone in production and is available on newly produced machines right now.

We know there is a new more efficient cooler running 65nm processor coming - it was meant to be out this spring but has been (supposedly) delayed until summer (May 1st?).

It is not much of a secret that a new & much bigger HDD is expected by almost everyone and is said to be on the way.

More and more people are reported as saying they have seen it & a new black machine is imminent - which would be a very nice way of clearly demonstrating the difference(s) the new model has.

Some of those same insiders say they have seen the new machine is fitted with an HDMI port.

Very interesting too was the publicly announced decision to cut back on the forecast of shipped units (which is/was basically a way of telling the financial markets that existing stocks are not being replaced = being run down).
Were or are they running stock down &/or getting rid of core models & making 'room' for the new version?

As you say though the question is whether all these new bits will roll out together or not.....and given that such a clearly new product is obviously weeks away from sale I can see no sane reason why they would dilute or confuse the market with a load of spread out & small releases.
Especially if HDMI didn't come then and it was obvious there'd be another version due out some time in the near future.
That wouldn't make any sense at all.

BTW I do expect the new HDD to be made available to existing owners.

Anyways at least we've only couple of weeks to wait. We shall see.
