First half million PS3 registrants to get Casino Royale

Siggy @ Feb 13, 2007 06:00 | 32 comments

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has announced that they will reward the first 500,000 PlayStation 3 owners who have registered on the PLAYSTATION Network with a brand-new Casino Royale Blu-ray.

Casino Royale has already grossed a whopping $560 million at the box office around the globe, and has become the most successful Bond movie of all time. The movie will be handed in a 50GB dual-layer Blu-ray disc encoded in MPEG-4 AVC with 1080p true HD resolution and uncompressed audio.

“The PLAYSTATION®Network unlocks the broad range of interactive entertainment features of PLAYSTATION 3. It’s easy to set up, offers free online gaming, has great tools for staying in touch with friends and family, and includes a wide variety of content for download through the PLAYSTATION®Store," Darren Carter, VP Brand and Consumer Marketing explained the unique offer.

Although the movie has done well in the box office does not necessarily mean that is that good. Could have given them a free voucher worth an amout to buy something online from their ps3 shop.

so are sony doing this because they are forcing euro customers to purchase the 60 gig hd ver of their game machine or the fact the there is price hike in comparison to Asian or American outlets? woo hoo arnt they fantastic a free movie lets all rush out now to pre order our ps3 to get a copy of a crappy movie stuffed with drm's. i think i'll w8 for the blue ray ver to appear on a torrent site and get a decent pc that can be upgraded instead of wasting my money on this piece of junk. the only ppl that will be fooled are the media educed, frenzied, hyped moron, the same ppl that purchased vista on the first day of release so microsoft can just use them as beta testers for the service pack that is due later this year! corporate f*%ks burn in hell.

Casino Royale is definately one of the better Bond films I've seen.

Are you sure about that?

Shake and bake. That just happened.
Does that blow your mind?

The terminology here is interesting. This is the first time I've seen someone say "a (movie title) (blue ray disc)." Of course you would say "Casino Royale DVD" but would you really say "Casino Royale Blu-Ray"? Or would you say "Casino Royale Blu-ray disc?"

It sounds odd if you don't put the word "disc" at the end, because otherwise it's not clear if you're talking about a player, a disc, or the laser beam itself. But on the other hand. "Blu-Ray disc" is a lot to say in comparison to "tape" or "DVD". Those words flow a little easier and don't sound clunky

Is Playstation Network the thing where you play games online?? If so, I better be getting a copy of casino Royale, cause I had one of the first systems out there and I signed up for that online play a while back to play some rentals.

How do you go about getting the free movie??? Wait, did I misunderstand?? Is this only for the UK? If so, Sony made the list...

@themind,

Are you questioning whether the ps3 came with $10 off vouchers?? Yes, it did. I guess it is 7, but I never counted.

I don't care, because they are piece of garbage movies that even after the $10 off are still $25, so they are rip offs. I would rather buy the previously viewed DVD for $2 to $5.

I have yet to buy a BD movie and the only one I own is Talladega Nights cause it came with the system. I am considering Underworld Evolution, but only if I find it for under $10. I'm guessing I still have a small wait until the price gets that low. It just sucks though. I have a system that cost $650 and all I use it for is ps2 games and I own three ps2 systems... I wish they would have released some games worth owning for the system.

- I take it something from their own site will suffice?

Actually the Aston Martin is technically a ford as well. As are range rovers and jaguars. It's product placement, so bond ends up in a Mondeo. Fantastic. Did you also note the cursory glance you got of the DB5 and the 22 second car chase in the Aston? Grr...

- Just wait until the US designers get their hands on them.

Look at what they did to the RangeRover, it used to be an elegant proportioned machine, now it's just yet another bloated muscle-bound US-style SUV.

- My God, unbelievable (haven't watched it yet).

What next, Bond in a Trabant? A Lada? A Fiat 500?
On an ancient Lambretta?

good to see sombody worrying about the important things. i think ill just call it Blu-ray, its easyer but it might still take some time before everybody knows what it is, just like dvd was when that first came out.

Comment by: sammorris (Feb 16, 2007 09:21)

Well to be fair Bond's been in all kinds of crap throughout the years, but that's usually a make-do-with-what-you-can-find scenario, not what he's actually given from MI6. (remember the renault that got sawn in half in View to a Kill?)

Comment by: Coolayton (Feb 16, 2007 15:52)

Does anybody know how they will go about notifying people that they are to recieve this movie? I bought my PS3 early enough that I may have been in the first 500,000 but I have no way to be sure... is there a way I can tell? Thanks!

The point is moot, especially considering Bond is rarely in a car during the movie.
Seriously though, the film has a lot more depth to it than a lot of bond films. I suggest you check it out.

Oh!!! No!!!!! and to the rest!!the car chase in a DB5? correct me if I'm wrong but the current model is DB9 but anyway bond is stooping very low. Ah mean a FORD!!!!!!! come now people ( even my american counterparts ) ah ford!! good for straight lines but corners to a ford is as welcome as a group hug in a "Third Degree Burn Unit". Seems to me like distant relatives of the romans. Straight lines are called for. Thats why Pakistan and India were not allowed to play in the World Cup, cause every time they got a corner they would build a shop, With RESPECT my pakistan and indian comrads, please with respect.Casino Royal is not a real bond movie man just look at who they got to play Bond!!!

Comment by: sammorris (Feb 16, 2007 19:34)

Actually I disagree there, I think Daniel Craig makes quite a good bond. I was a bit unnerved first of all but I think he played the part well.

Can Anyone answer the most on-topic question I have seen ... which is ... Is there any concrete way of knowing whether you are in the first 500,000 people registered on the PS3 network? It would be nice to know if there is a free copy of a movie on the way before it is purchased.

Thanks,
Jake

Casino Royale was the first bond novel which was then followed by a lot more. The original bond was described in a way that
Daniel Craig played. It's not as if the recent bond films have been good and CR made them worse. Quite the opposite, i'd say.

- I'm sure they'll let you know if you're one of the 500,000, but if it's on the basis of 'first come first served' and it's up to those first 500,000 buyers to register to qualify how could you possibly know beforehand and without them telling you so?

You'll just have to wait.

Maybe I am wrong in assuming this ... but they are talking specifically about the PS3 launch in Europe correct... so it's kind of like, be in the first 500,000 after the Europe launch date to register.... or do they mean ALL of the first 500,000 registrants will receive a copy of the movie including the people in the US and CANADA who already own the PS3 with a copy of Ricky Bobby:Taladega nights ??

I suspect this is an offer only open to europeans.

Comment by: pigfister (Feb 19, 2007 07:08)

yes it is for euro residents as sony are trying to encourage sales after they threatened legal action and the threat of withdrawing retailers rights to sell sony products if any ps3 were imported from either the US or Asia and that Euro customers are only being offered the more expensive 60gb machine at a higher mark up price than is offered in the rest of the world. courporate f%*ks burn in hell!

"Blu-Ray disc" is a mouthful compared to DVD or CD but I have heard Blu-ray discs referred to as BD and BD-r
