PS3 router functionality dropped

Dela @ Jul 11, 2005 21:52 | 18 comments

A change has been made to the original specs that were unveiled for the Sony Playstation 3 (PS3). Due to the costs of manufacturing, Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi told publication Nikkei Electronic, that the PS3 will no longer be able to act as a home network router. He admitted that it would simply cost too much to leave the functionality in the console which is expected to be released in spring next year.

Originally the PS3 would have allowed the system's three Gigabit Ethernet ports to be used as a home router. Sony suspects now that users will simply continue to use their existing router hardware, which is becoming more used in homes now for such tasks as sharing Internet broadband connections. It's not yet clear how exactly this will change the look of the PS3.

I think its better without it anyways...the end result is a cheaper product. besides, most people that have a home network have a router anyways

well, it's not a shocker...i'm sure more functions will be lost soon.

after this change, will the ps3 have the wifi connection built in in your opinion?

Can I just add that HD-DVD so called 45GB size is with three layers of data meaning that it will cost a bomb. single layer is 15gb 2 layer 30 and 3 layer 45 as you can imagine more layers equals higher cost. blue ray however is 25Gb per layer. so 50gb discs are 2 layer and they have developed a 100gb 4 layer blue ray disc so in terms of holding data HD-DVD doesnt stand a chance. am not a fan of blue ray just pointing out the facts

solargame, i'm willing to bet the ps3 will lose the wifi on the stock stuff, but might have an aftermarket kit.

Well it's step 1 in reducing the cost of making the Ps3 no big shock.

I wonder how much the PS3 will cost now?

I wouldn't use a router built into my PS3. I would want a, dedicated, standalone device. Besides, Sony has no face in the networking industry, the have not ever made a router/switch product before.

Comment by: mikey_ray (Jul 13, 2005 03:57)

i for one wanted the router cause my ps3 would be in my room so my one dsl wire couldt go to the ps3 then to my computer

but i guess im still gonna have to take the wire out and then plug it in to my ps3 back and forth back and forth

Comment by: Auslander (Jul 13, 2005 15:02)

or just get a cheap router.

Comment by: mikey_ray (Jul 13, 2005 22:53)

i have dsl and i bought a router but you need to set all these numbers and iq-things i dont know plus they said i have to call to get something pinged--etc

why cant u just plug it in and it would just split the signal

--ooh by the way its cause i have a password sensative dsl crap

Comment by: Auslander (Jul 13, 2005 23:08)

that bites. no one can get it straightened out for you?

Comment by: rav0 (Jul 13, 2005 23:15)

You can't plug your DSL line straight to your PS3/PS2, you need it to go to a modem, them you plug that to your Playstation via ethernet, or from your modem to a computer via usb or ethernet, then from the computer to Playstation via ethernet.

HD-DVD possibly might be regular DVD's (DVD5 & DVD9) with video containing a high compression video such as MPEG4 (DivX/XVID.) If not I still think the Blue Laser Disks have a chance but I also am not fan of them.

What's the chance PS3 will debut at $299.99? I think that will be their price point, especially if they drop the Router/WiFi/HDD & maybe something else.
