Valve will release PC/console next year

DVDBack23 @ Dec 09, 2012 16:05 | 25 comments

Valve boss Gabe Newell has announced this week that the company will be launching a console built for the living room next year.

Newell says the company's main focus now is how to make PCs work better in the living room on the big screen. The first step was releasing their "Big Picture" UI earlier this year.

PC packages that are designed to run on a TV will be launched next year, by Valve and by other manufacturers, with each being able to run Steam flawlessly out of the gate.

Newell says the PCs will compete with the Xbox 8 and the PS4.

"I think in general that most customers and most developers are gonna find that [the PC is] a better environment for them," Newell noted to Kotaku. "Cause they won't have to split the world into thinking about 'why are my friends in the living room, why are my video sources in the living room different from everyone else?' So in a sense we hopefully are gonna unify those environments. We'll do it but we also think other people will as well."

The Valve head did note that their console would not be as open as the average computer: "Well certainly our hardware will be a very controlled environment. If you want more flexibility, you can always buy a more general purpose PC. For people who want a more turnkey solution, that's what some people are really gonna want for their living room. The nice thing about a PC is a lot of different people can try out different solutions, and customers can find the ones that work best for them."

You mean, will purchased games be compatible/present across both the "PC Steam" and "PC/Console Hybrid Steam"? Bloody hope so or they might as well not bother!

I doubt it will replace my gaming computer but I could see it replacing my computer in the living room. I am glad to see someone working on promoting PC over console though.

Eh what? I don't understand the point. PS3 is compeltely hacked so you can play "illegal" games, also not forgetting the fact that they had all passwords and accountnamed uncrypted in their database.

PS4 current setup barely can run UT4 and Xbox has somewhat same shit in their console. PS3 setup is shit, Xbox 360 setup is shit. Won't require absolutely anything to compete with those 2.

Neither sides have ANY exclusives worth of playing, seriously, not a single game that isnt multiplatform.

But nevertheless, this console will not succeed, consoles are dead and they should be, too.

I don't think you can say that consols are dead I don't think they will be anytime soon.

If what you're saying is that PC gaming is much better. I would tend to agree. The graphics are better, the control options are sometimes much better. And really when you think about it you don't have to spend that much to get a computer that is far beyond a game system and it will do more than simply play games and do basic web surfing.

been there done that. i cant post a link, but all i can say is that the "Phantom Console" was suppose to bring pc gaming to the console market. but end up just being a Phantom it's self. look it up

It's a known fact that PCs are always going to be one step ahead of consoles. The likes of the Xbox 360 and PS3 are virtually PCs anyway. Valve releasing a PC console for the living room, it's been going on for years with consoles. Valve are very much into PC tech, consoles will always be second, but consoles are a lot more popular than PCs. I suppose a PC console that you can upgrade would be a great idea, but that's no different than a PC, which can be upgraded anyway. The biggest bug is the cost of an upgradable PC console. So unless someone comes up with a cheap, upgradable PC console, the PC will just continue to hang on in the backround.

Because sony, and Microsoft have not been hacked before? I remember Sony clearly being down for months afterwards, and Microsoft is just genuine fail.

Really,we are calling everybody names and starting a pissing contest over a video game system that may or may not pan out???!!!

Another player, in the console wars, might be a good thing. I've been playing, using a computer, since Zork was on the Com64. Still, as good as I liked my computer games, in the end, for my family, kids and a wife, a console system is more entertaining now. Do not misunderstand, I fully believe the PC will always have better specs for game play over the consoles, hell I still miss playing with the keyboard only. I also miss playing donkey kong on coleco vision, wait I just need to figure how to connect the video cable from it to my LEDTV.

Really, I cannot think of a current game title, that I must have on a pc. I like the kinect idea, I bought a 360 just for my kids, and like it a little. I always like the Sony layout for the controller, yet I'm not really thrilled with their psn setup.

I think it's more so Devs don't have to hassle with the witchcraft that is porting and licensing games on other platforms.

You sound like the stereotypical xbox live player..

First: The i7 has hundreds of variants, some as slow as a pentium 2, name the model, not the series.

Second: Graphics cards arent measured in ghz, they are in gigabytes, and 1gb isnt very much for a graphics card... Most gamers have 2-3 gig vid cards.

Third: 2 Terabyte's is a good bit... But again, most gamers...and specially those with steam have more then that.

For example I bought about 10 games (all less then 2 years old) for $6 thanks to steam. I get all my games in one convient place, never having to switch cds..or being worried about discs breaking... If i throw my computer out the window... I can install steam on a new one and BAM all my games are still there.

Where are you hearing of steam being Hacked and "Bent over the table"... Maybe your thinking of Sony/Microsoft in mid 2012?

Comment by: Justoneguy (Dec 12, 2012 06:25)

Aside from all of the rude comments and speculation, we'll just have to judge it when it comes out. More competition is usually a good thing, and if the operating system is based on Linux it might be interesting.

Comment by: xboxdvl2 (Dec 12, 2012 07:53)

if the new console is decent and comes out before the next xbox and playstation, sony and microsoft might develop better hardware and games to compete with it.

as for some of the earlier comments sony exclusive gran turismo you wont find any racing games with smoother, more realistic graphics.

im sure xbox would have some exclusives but as i dont play 1 im not sure thinking halo.

as for steam there are ways to illegally download games for free.

Are you suggesting that if this console comes out before the new xbox and playstation, they'll (microsoft and sony) decide to put better hardware in all of a sudden?

There isn't a snowballs chance in hell of that happening, or maybe your talking about the cycle after this one, in 7 to 10 years.

@Molsen...you need a RF modulator (check Amazon) to convert the signal to plug into the composite inputs on your TV.
