Nintendo names Wii U controller the 'GamePad'

DVDBack23 @ Jun 04, 2012 05:23 | 18 comments

Nintendo has officially unveiled the final design for its Wii U tablet controller, dubbed the "GamePad."

The tablet has a 6.2-inch touchscreen, two analog sticks, built-in motion sensors and a universal remote.

Additionally, the GamePad also supports NFC, making it easier to read info from special game cards or toys placed on the screen. For example, Skylanders lets users change their character by placing different figurines on the NFC peripheral.

Finally, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata also showed off the "Miiverse," a dedicated social network that uses the customizable "Mii" characters all Wii or 3DS gamers have already created.

Nintendo will show off more details at E3 this week for the console that will be released this holiday season.

Dumb. "Gamepad" is what many post-joystick only directional controllers have been called for years.

They were not officially called gamepad...that's just the generic term. Maybe NASA will follow the example and call their next rocket "spaceship".

Seems like there just trying to fill in time with fluff. I'm not sure there is really anything to look forward to with Nintendo. Don't think the gamepad is going to be enough

I'm not a Nintendo hater but I feel they are way off track on these joysticks. If you are able to put them in your lap a la Neo Geo sticks then I will be completely convinced. Only time will tell.

Personally, I prefer controls that make you forget they are in your hand. The ds3 does this, the 360 controller does this, even a kb/mouse combo does this. It improves immersion more than anything. I don't see this controller doing the job, with the possible exception of Fallout.

Too much hype about the controller, just as the Wii was hyped. I fear for the console specs...

That is why they made the Wii-U Control Pad Pro that literally imitates the 360 design. Should be interesting. Personally I feel developers won't bother with making games that will use the CPP, but hey stranger things have happened. We should know more tomorrow.

Universal Remote Huh? Does this mean that it can perform similarly to a Harmony Remote?

hey, I'm 34 now and I play video games since 85,if we talk about quantity, Nintendo don't have many games with success compare to Sony, but all console companies and game developers like Microsoft, Sony, Sega have followed Nintendo in innovations particularly in Controller
in the video games world in 90-91's Nintendo came first with the 4-buttons (a,b,x,y) and the L R button, Sega has followed the process and claimed the consumers to buy another similar controller it made.
In 96 Nintendo first came with the joystick and Sony had to put a new similar controller.
And finally you will tell me why Sony and Microsoft had to put motion controller at last, is it because Motion controller don't give good accuracy? oh damn

You replied to my comments with another subject, I was talking about the misjudgement of the new controller and you talked about M games, I don't see the relation or I don't understand the reply

Comment by: xaznboitx (Jun 06, 2012 20:52)

my point is that the new controller is needed to play rated m games
