Nintendo confirms it will have first yearly loss, ever

DVDBack23 @ Oct 27, 2011 20:14 | 6 comments

Nintendo has confirmed today that it will see its first ever annual net loss, mainly due to a strong yen and weak sales of their software and hardware.

Because the yen continues to strengthen against the USD and the euro, Nintendo has been forced to reduce its earnings.

Additionally, the failed 3DS handheld has caused losses as Nintendo was forced to slash the price of the device just months after launch.

Nintendo will see a loss of 20 billion yen ($258 million) for the quarter. Last year the company had a 30 billion yen gain.

Finally, Nintendo chopped its forecast for 3DS sales down 30 percent to 50 million in its first year of availability.

That's true but they should just stop making these all together.

I agree, they should quit the 3Ds - its dead for sure. I might get one if the price drops to £80 - £90

I wish Nintendo would get on its feet again...I would love to see a next-gen graphics console from Nintendo, and it's not looking like that's gonna happen with this "WiiU". They need to take a hint and start investing in graphics and innovative, non-gimmicky game-play...would be a shame to see a great historic company like Nintendo fail in the face of Sony and Microsoft just due to lack of vision.

Why? Perhaps I am mistaken but I believe the Nintendo DS was over all successful. Just because you have one hand-held that fails, doesn't mean stop making them all together.

Well keep in mind the Wii was the dominant market leader. If the WiiU can do the same, then they have a hit on there hands. No need for next-gen yet, but of course it wouldn't hurt. If it gets priced right they could do well.

i would believe they would stop losing money if they didn't come out with the handheld every other 6 months or so. DS DSI, DXL, 3d and whatever they had, I might get these named wrong, since I dont even own one anymore
