Capcom tries to kill used game market

DVDBack23 @ Jun 27, 2011 17:44 | 21 comments

Capcom has taken a stab at killing the used game market this week with the release of Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D for the Nintendo 3DS.

The manual for the game specifically states that "saved data on this software cannot be reset," meaning once the game has been finished, the save file cannot be reset to play again from scratch.

It appears that some retailers in Japan will only buy the game back for $6 (it sells brand new MSRP at $40) given Capcom's move.

Time will tell if the anti-consumer ploy will pay off in sales.

unbeleavable

Everything I have written is a lie and a product of my imagination.

Or you could quit the bull crap and make mega man legends 3 for a non handheld console.

Yet another reason to use Flash Carts. They save the data in a file separate from the game which means you can delete it and start over anytime you wish.

Tarded move Capcom, this could end up hurting you more than it will helping you.

Comment by: KSib (Jun 27, 2011 18:44)

It's like they want you to pirate it. Wanna sell the game to a friend? Too bad. Who comes up with these bad ideas? Wanna throw in some obnoxious DRM in there too while you're at it? I mean, while you're already killing your own sales you might as well go all the way.

Capcom is going to learn the hard way just like the developers of "Spore". You piss off the gamers who buy your games, and they won't buy them anymore... There are few gamers who will not replay a game, (unless the game sucks) and for those that do replay a game, they won't want to buy this game. Why would they? Play it once and it is over? What a stupid move!

This is the stupidest thing I have ever seen. They want you to pay top dollar to play a game once and then it no longer works. I wonder if these greedy a holes buy the used games back from shops at a huge discount reset the save file and then sell them for $40 all over again, it would not surprise me in the slightest.

This would be akin to watching a movie at the theater... what is it now? Almost $20 a head? And then charge you, basically, another $20 a head when it hits commercial TV broadcast. Terrible analogy, but probably not too far from the truth if Capcom gets their & the rest of the copyright brigade starts following suit.

I guess this game would only be good in the hands of pirates, since they could delete the save

So once you've played the game, you can't start again to look for the "secrets" or just to make different decisions ?

F*** Capcom. I'm not buying any of their stuff until they get rid of this garbage. I'm not buying a game I can only play once.

If they didn't make such terrible games, I would say people should pirate them...but really, I don't think anyone should waste their time playing anything made by this has-been studio. There are free flash games online that are better than anything capcom currently offers on any platform.

I loved the hell out of Lost Planet 2. But that's already a year old and long forgotten >.>

Just did a bit of research on this.

This 'no reseting the auto-saves' is really not a big deal on this title, however I do agree that if this mentality is carried over to full games, then yeah we have a problem.

In this game, all one really does is kill wave after wave of baddies. the better times/hits the better the score. there is no real storyline or campaign mode.

it's kinda like just a simple classic arcade game.

all the save really has is highscores. so someone buying a complete game used will find that person's highscores on the levels already and that's about it.

That aspect kinda makes it neat and more like a classic arcade game where you play and find some joe blow's highscores and you can try to beat them.

So this would be cool, if it wasn't a $40 game, that is just too much for a wave shooter with no real story.

Ok. If that's how it is, then sure, it's actually not that terrible; I wouldn't mind playing a used game and trying to beat a "ghost"'s score. But if that's the case, then the article is rather misleading as I don't see how previous high scores/not starting from scratch could harm the pre-owned market.

There might not be any harm in this game having a non-deletable save. However, once something like this starts it could branch to other games that should have an option to erase your save; and it would effectively kill the ability to resell those games.

Resident Evil 5 was great!!.......at edited by ddp!!! Only a edited by ddp could hope to figure out that controller scheme...ugh..it still haunts me to this day. Played for maybe 15 minutes, then edited by ddp canned it. So yeah i am in agreement.
