Sony reveals sales figures for gaming systems

DVDBack23 @ May 14, 2010 04:09 | 4 comments

Sony, along with their quarterly earnings, has revealed the sales figures for their gaming consoles.

Overall sales were down 10.2 percent for the fiscal year ended March 2010, but the PlayStation 3 was up significantly, from 10.3 to 13 million.

The overall decrease can be attributed to the fall of the PSP handheld and the aging PlayStation 2.

PSP sales were down large from 14 million to 9.9 million and the PlayStation 2 fell marginally from 7.9 million to 7.3 million.

The company reported an operating loss of $889.1 million USD for the year, slightly down from the $900 million+ loss last year.

Software sales on the PS3 jumped to 115.3 million from 103.7 million last year, while PS2 game sales collapsed to 35.7 million from 83.5 million. PSP game title sales fell as well from 50.3 million to 44.4 million.

Drop the price of the PS3 to 200$ already..... you can afford it.....

Until lobbying is a hanging offense I choose anarchy!
Ah modern gaming its like modern film only the watering down of fiction and characters is replaced with shallow and watered down mechanics, gimmicks and shiny-er "people".

I don't know about being able to afford it after another year of heavy losses (for Sony as a whole not specifically their PS line) but I just posted this about their profitability & so on ~

And the new 40nm RSX model is shipping now which will help out profitability and possibly a counter price drop (probably only to $249) when MS does theirs this year as it is almost definitely going to happen....

They can afford a price cut...Sony BGM is proof of that...if they didn't have billions of dollars to throw away every year, then they would not keep trowing away billions of dollars on Sony BGM every year.

As for PS2 sales...I am a bit surprised people are still buying them. The only use for a PS2 that I see is as a MP3 player/SD video box...and you can't use the new ones like that because sony blocked the freeMCboot exploit.

Well $60 for a console with over like 2000 games or something, you can't really go wrong... Might not look as awesome as current generation games but they're still games and they're still fun :)
