Wii sales top 70 million worldwideDVDBack23 @ May 10, 2010 03:36 | 10 comments
The number, 70.93 million, is good for about 49 percent of the home console market, with rivals Xbox 360 and PS3 controlling 27 and 24 percent, respectively.
For the year, sales of the Wii hardware jumped in Japan to 2.38 million from 2.06 million, but sales in the Americas fell drastically from 12.93 million to 9.86 million. In the EU and other nations, sales fell from 10.96 million to 8.30 million.
Overall, software sales decreased, but "million-seller titles" jumped from 54 to 79.
Software sales fell from 204.58 million to 191.81 million, with sales only rising in Japan. |

Comment by: Paula_X (May 10, 2010 15:53) so what?.. items sold is all that counts. Even if only 25% are "still used" that's still 35 million.. compare that to ps3 sales figures.. or 360 figures for that matter.. I know plenty of people who use theirs, and lots of ps3 owners who have left theirs gathering dust after finding out BR film choice is restricted and the games aren't there or are the same old crap targeted at the same old audience that the 360 aims at.. and that has been left unused in a few places because the noise is very intrusive. Your argument doesn't hold water.. who cares if people buy something then after a while stop using it.. bet you have plenty of stuff in the attic and the shed and even the kitchen which you don't use any more, I know I do..

Comment by: slickwill (May 10, 2010 18:37) When cloud computer and faster internet improves, there will be no need for consoles anymore b/c all the processing will be done in the cloud (offsite) and the player will only see the video output through the internet while giving control input through a computer. |

Consoles need a place in the home, and the PC does too. They need to be 2 seperate items not combined into one, IMO.

Comment by: Mysttic (May 12, 2010 02:33) Who claims about wanting it to be about graphics and hardcore gamers. There are tons of kids games that are fun; what I talking about is taking gamers back to the days of Nintendo Seal of Quality. I had an NES/SNES when I was a kid, starting at age 4 and up; and the games had quality, were polished and finished. Yea there were lots of shit games, but there were hundreds of fun games from good to rent to must have. Now you look at gaming and yes its more expensive to create, but the way I say it, all people, *not just gamers* would rather wait an extra 6 months for a polished game to finish, rather than release a game in X amount of time and have it buggy as fuck, boring as fuck, and waist of $50 to boot.

As long as people are still buying DVDs and blu-rays to play at home on their DVD player/Blu-ray player video games will still be executed on a processor in the home. Movies and other streaming style entertainment will be the first to disappear in the the cloud of vapor before video games go. |
