Microsoft denies report of new Xbox coming in 2010

DVDBack23 @ Jun 16, 2009 19:50 | 23 comments

Microsoft sources have denied 1UP's recent report that a new Xbox is coming in late 2010.

Aaron Greenberg, director of product management, says: "I think part of the excitement about this announcement is that in many ways we are delivering a next generation experience this generation. With that said, I can confirm that Natal will run on Xbox 360 so no new console investment will be necessary."

Adds another Microsoft source: "Don't believe nonsense on the internet is all I'll say. We'll do the right thing for Natal."

During the weekend, 1UP reported that a "new" Xbox console would be launched in fall 2010, with improved hardware and full backwards compatibility with the 360.

Rich Leadbetter, editor of Eurogamer's Digital Foundry channel, also says: "The fact is that an enhanced Xbox 360 is rather unlikely simply because the tech requires none of the console's processing might to sift through the data acquired by the 3D camera."

"All of the really clever stuff that Natal does is carried out onboard [the camera device], with the data then streamed across to the 360 via USB. If, as the 1UP report suggests, the 360 update is only offering a minimal amount of extra power, then the question surely must be, what's the point of that?"

cant imagine anyone ever trusting those bozos again after the rrod fiasco. Would you plunk down 400 for a next gen system in 2010 from microsoft?

I thought not.

if they can keep there current game lineup i would. the 360 was my only console i didn't wait about a year to purchase. Xbox Dev was dead in water when the 360 hit.

Well, unless they make virtually every game NATAL compatible, it's still going to be trash after two weeks. Playing Wii Sports still? I doubt it.

Plus, I can just see fighting games... You can kick and hit, but can't be kicked or hit, because that would mean your character flies back across the screen and lands on his back. Then, in order to make your character stand up before some random ninja impales your head on a stick, you've got to throw yourself down onto the floor (as your character did) then stand up.

More excercise than WiiFit? Absolutely. 15 days after public release, will someone have fractured their skull on a coffee table trying to make their NATAL FIGHTER X character standup? Most likely.

i wonder if you could use it with a light gun.

virtua cop, where you physically have to duck down to reload and/or take cover would be awesome

there is a game like that made by konami in the arcades its super fun I can't remember the name of it for the life of me though. I think they should make a new one or port it for natal

I guess 2010 is assumed because that would be 5 years, the previous xbox was around for about 5 years.

If it's fully backwards with 360 games than I see no problem with releasing it. Sell off remaining stock, then release this one.

Have a toaster built in to ward off any heating problems being related to the GPU/CPU. Eating toast as I play would be sweet. Make the console Yellow, because red has already been taken.

watch it have a blu-ray drive

"so no new console investment will be necessary"

That's hardly a concrete denial.

The thing is, there is a new Xbox coming (in a matter of months too).

The 'Valhalla' SoC 45nm version (Xbox 360 slim? or will they call if Xbox Natal and launch it with the camera etc?).
It remains to be seen whether or not the take the opportunity to revise and upgrade some components.
I fully expect it to play every 360 game perfectly (or perhaps even a little better).
But it'll still be an Xbox 360 at heart.

After this the Xbox 720.
Even with this one, now that we are in the middle of settling into TVs spreading with a max resolution of 1920 x 1080, we are not likely to be seeing enormous leaps in ability (and that applies to all the consoles).
More RAM, a faster CPU/GPU and maybe a relatively small SSD to lower noise levels after you save the game to the SSD but I don't see much beyond that.
Not that I'd need much beyond that.
Only the external hard disc drive of my choice to move stuff between it & the SSD to play (cos I can't see them ever letting us play games off of an external drive).

There will be no Xbox with Blu-ray.
If anything (for those countries without a modern internet infrastructure) Microsoft will go with the tech they know and partly own.
HD DVD.
They may well use the 51gb dvd.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">HD DVD triple layer tech as their own secure disk-based media.
For those who don't know it's still being developed.

It makes sense and it means they'll never pay Sony & the BDA a cent.

+1 considering the 360 has outsold the PS3 consistently since day one and don't start with "well that's 'cos it was released 1st crap" I'm not here to get into fanboy flame wars. However, given the fact that the Microsoft released a 3yr extended warranty to fix their faulty hardware (I personally took advantage of this) would I still buy a new Xbox (fabled 720) yes I would! Why because my old PS2 is just as good as the PS3.

The next gen xBox will be using the "cell" processor. Remember Sony sold their interest to Toshiba.

I'd bet the house they don't, why would they?
Microsoft have an interest in seeing PC hardware & console hardware come together, so why would they forget about that & use Cell?

Noone else is, except IBM (for their server tech) and ironically Toshiba in their latest HD TVs.

Cell is a dead end that noone else has picked up on.

Sony never sold the interest to anybody, the Cell processor was Jointed by Sony IBM and Toshiba. IBM has more patents on the technology than anybody.

the tricore Xenon uses a piece of cells Architecture known as PPE.

1UP seems to be trying to get more viewers with such BS. No company in their right mind would not announce such a thing so earlier to a release date. First you hint, than you show basic things at E3 or at another event. Than finally you have a big show and tell.

No wonder EGM died, they were in the company of idiots. And, I fear we'll see such rumors for 3-5 years until the next Xbox finally does come out.

Microsoft is saying there would be no new xbox, and now Ballmer just recently confirmed that there WILL be a new SKU with possibly new hardware coming in 2010. Anyone else finding the things that come out of Microsoft's representatives’ mouths to be a load of crap?

a new SKU. yes, a piece of hardware. yes, a whole brand new next gen xbox to run it. No.

Xbox 360 has plenty of power to stay in competition, with its favorite competitor.

what it doesn't have is storage potential.
