Quake in your browser

Siggy @ Feb 04, 2009 12:00 | 12 comments

The developer of the popular Quake game series, id Software, has released a closed beta of their newest prodigy, Quake Live. Based on the 1999 hit game Quake III Arena, Quake Live brings the same graphics and gaming experience to a browser near you -- if you own a Windows Vista or XP computer and have a Firefox (version 1.5, 2.0 or 3.0) or an Internet Explorer (version 6, 7 or 8) web browser. Quake Live does not support Mac, at least not yet.

Quake Live comes with pretty much all the same features as Quake III Arena -- character selection, control customization, video settings and full screen mode. As an addition it introduces gaming statistics and a friends list.

Quake Live should scale pretty well and you don't need the latest and greatest PC on the market. That being said, if you want to enjoy full graphics and details a netbook won't do it. Anyway, everyone obviously wants to see what it looks like so here's a video:

So instead of making a new game that requires effort you repack the old stuff as new?

Re gifting is a business model?

They must be tapped for ideas and think we are mindless chumps. Watch, it will have some real price point too lol like 40 bucks or something nuts like that

Well ID is just a engine builder now adays they sub out all the strenuous work, much like Epic those Epic still has map makers and designers for some strange reason... sorry UT3 fail, GOW.....fail....

D3 is the sign of the times the sign when things focused to much on graphics and no substance.

Rage dose look nice tho.

I think it will be pretty sweet to be able to play it out of the browser and have stats and a friend list. Like a big network game, if they do it right, and if it isn't very expensive, it is an OLD game after all. I wouldn't pay more than ten bucks for it.

If "they" got up Doom,Strife,Duke,Blood,Quake,Unreal up on browsers it would be a ton of fun, it would be like dailing up each other in the old days only easier!

Quake Live will be completely free. And there will be Mac support in the future.

Ahhh the good old days of playing Duke Nukem, Quake, and Tribes in networking classes... Nothing better than having someone stand up in the middle of class and yelling at you for fragging them.

Indeed, unlike most acronyms, the Quake ones stick with us for good :)

Fallout 3 has stole my soul, for about 30 hours till the paint wore off.... even if its a action focused FPS RPG, at least its a FPS RPG not a under deved shooter like Bioshock!

Tell me about it for me great FPSs come to a end around the time of Clive Barker undying,Arx fatalis and yes Halo 1.

Everything past 02/03 is just so shallow its not funny....
