PS3 firmware update brings Flash 9 support, background downloading

DVDBack23 @ Oct 15, 2008 23:31 | 28 comments

Sony has detailed the new PlayStation 3 firmware update, version 2.50, and with it comes the much anticipated addition of Macromedia Flash 9 support.

Users can now watch much more videos then they could previously using the built-in browser on the PS3.

2.50 also brings support for the latest PS3 Bluetooth headest as well as more "PlayStation Trophies, interface enhancements, Friend status, video, Playstation Store, Power Save Settings, Background download, and ingame screenshots."

The most notable of those features is probably the background which means that PS3 owners can now begin a download of a demo, game or movie and turn the system off with hindering the download.

i'm a xcrap fan and dont even have a ps3 tho will when the price drops but it does kinda suck when a game is online only instead of having a campaign with a multiplayer but it might make the online play better if its based around online only plus with dedicated servers.....

Updated Flash is a GOOD thing.

Nice...

To the off-topic fanboy:
OMG, you said socom sucks... then you seriously haven't played socom confrontation. The game is awesome and brings the tactical side of players into the game. It also goes back to the basis. So what if it's multiplayer only, warhawk is multi only and it is still great. And I know people that play halo just for the multiplayer.

NOW back on topic.
It is awesome that there is finally flash 9, I now have the ability to go to most flash sites now. I also like this new update, it makes things more fluid and now more DIVX format files work. I had a few that didn't work before, but now I'm able to play them =]
These updates make sure are making things a lot better.

Also the psp update was awesome, the psp also feels more fluid.

What does that have to do with ANYTHING?

On topic: Does anyone know of a list of supported games for the screencap feature? And they finally added the ability to turn off the PS3 after a finished download, as well as turning off the controller when in-active. The two things that tied to together to annoy me have both been fixed in the same update, good thing.

I'm glad they adding new features. The one feature they need to fix and stop taking their time with is the in game music. I know MS own's the in game patent but that one needs to be addressed. I love my PS3 but the in game music out of all they added in should have been fixed and not left up to the dev's. I read on another report that the game screen shot feature will be left for the dev's to code in their game rather than a main feature of the system. If that is the case they really need to re-think that one.

pain and burnout have in game music. i like the update and i like how sony is always updateing

Comment by: Invasian (Oct 16, 2008 02:58)

Yes I like these kinds of updates! I kind of wish the folding home was better.

Comment by: SSSJDanny (Oct 16, 2008 04:24)

Im tired of these console wars, if you dont have anything to actually add to this post dont comment.

I was kinda hoping it would be able to play mt2s files

Comment by: Vr0cK (Oct 16, 2008 05:52)

Great updates, always good to have more features. Tho i wish the PS3 had a firmware to just simply play every type of video file instead of having to convert it before transfering it to PS3.

It's about time that console manufacturers started to pay the licences but it's just a shame that we are now using flash 10, ah well back to the drawing board!

Well you can't expect them (Sony, M$, Nitty) to actually provide a fully operational media hub (Console) when licences have to be paid to other companies now, or do you?

The PS3 is the future, or is it the Past?

everyone but PS3 users get your flash 10 player here! http://www.filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_ie/

Flash 10 released on the same day ps3 gets flash 9? The way that looks I'd guess that the ps3 having to work on a previous version of flash was in a contract agreement or something.

Don't quote me wrong as i believe that added functionality is good and this will allow much more media to be accessed, but when they sell things as a media hub and only use the last gen tech, it's false advertising and it sucks, all because they are not willing to pay for licences to allow the users of the said console to enable use the latest media.

you can browse the web but only look at 5% of the media content!

Yeah I know the feeling of going to stream some videos on my hdtv rather than my crt computer monitor only to find that the ps3's flash is outdated. But I'm sure there's some reason behind it besides just saving money.

I really don't comprehend whats being said here, can anyone elaborate?

And it also has the added benfit of directing people to their PSN movie selection. One can either do all the work and research to convert the variety of movies files one has, or throw ones hands in the air and say "forget it, I'd rather just download it from their store." (not me of course ;) )

if you are watching youtube content ect, you can use a variety of different apps to download and keep the content if you are using a PC or Mac, can a ps3 do this....

but other than shorts that can be watched online ppl would be wise to purchase content like films ect on dvd so they own it for life, and bypass the psn video DRM that is basically a full price DVD that turns into a long term rental.

PlayStation Video Store Hampered by DRM

The tech-savvy folks over at Ars Technica have taken issue with Sony's recently launched downloadable video store for the PS3, and they believe that -- as is the case with so many things these days -- digital rights management has the potential to cripple the service.

The power save settings, background download, and in-game screen shots are a good addition.

So does Warhawk. I can't wait to check this out.

So does Super Stardust HD. I just found this out when I finally decided to buy it a few days ago. Custom in game music brings a while new life to a game. I think the experience is truly under-rated.

funily enough arstechnica has ran some benchmarks on flash 10 and they don't seem to share your opinion!

mac = As you can see, GUIMark results offer the best backup for Uro's claims that performance on Mac OS X has improved as much as three times. Four frames per second in Flash Player 9 on the MacBook Air, and 9.5 FPS on the Mac Pro, is, quite frankly, pathetic. While 17 FPS on the Air in Flash Player 10 isn't exactly great, it is actually over a 4x boost in performance.

Linux = Another big improvement for Linux users

Conclusion = The latest version of Flash offers tangible improvements for users and for designers.

So your saying that if someone has a Mac, then 10 is better. This artical is about 9 on PS3. Thanks Sony for more free stuff.

Like somone else said,Warhawk is an online only game and its one of the top 5 games on PS3,its the funest game i've played on ps3 with hours of play and replay value, anyone that plays warhawk will be addicted to the game play, not having a campaign mode does'nt hurt the game at all.

Comment by: Jemborg (Oct 23, 2008 10:52)

Yeah, this talk "it's only an online game" seem plain stupid to me. Some people only want to play online MP. And with free servers that's not a bad deal.

No, I do NOT own a PS3 nor do I want one. Maybe in a couple of years... I was so disappointed and disgusted with it's lame GPU. (I don't care what you say).

Whilst it's good that Sony have improved the firmware consoles have always seemed a poor compromise as far as media centres go. I took the money I was gonna spend on a PS3 and built a silent mATX for the lounge. With hardware decoding of BluRay and HD-DVD and HDMI out, one terabyte of raid, wireless peripherals it does everything no problems and is easily upgradable.

Its a lot easier being righteous than right.
