Microsoft announces deals with Netflix, NBC-UniversalDVDBack23 @ Jul 15, 2008 05:40 | 14 comments
The first deal is with rental giant Netflix and will allow subscribers with an Xbox Live Gold membership to watch movies online for free. The Netflix feature should be part of a complete overhaul of the Xbox 360 interface which is expected in the fall.
The redesign will use a Cover-Flow-like interface that will allow for visual browsing instead of text. There will also be the addition of a "Primetime" channel "for live events and personalized avatars that can be integrated into games."
The second deal is with NBC-Universal and will add the studio's catalog to the Xbox Video Marketplace for rentals and downloads in both SD and HD. There will also be NBC's TV shows available. NBC programming is already available in the Zune Marketplace. |

Comment by: dragnandy (Jul 15, 2008 06:00) the netflix one sounds like a good deal. |
Comment by: PantherM (Jul 15, 2008 06:41) If the annual price stays the same for a gold membership, then that Netflix deal is pretty freaking cool. |
Comment by: redux79 (Jul 15, 2008 10:39) Netflix has been adding quite a few streaming titles as of late, apparently by the time this partnership gets off the ground the number of titles is suppose to double.

Hopefully it will just be free. ![]() Search > http://forums.afterdawn.com/search Rules > http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2487 Important Rule > http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/380660 |
Comment by: xdgen84 (Jul 15, 2008 13:41) From what I've heard, if you have live gold, you won't have to pay any additional fees beyond the live service and your current netflix subscription. What interests me is what content will be available. If it is only Netflix's streaming options, which are currently lacking, IMO, it may take a while to build and grow. Still, a great opportunity. |

Comment by: emugamer (Jul 15, 2008 16:03) Originally posted by redux79: Something is going to bring all of this to a halt. All of these video streaming devices are going to have an impact on what people pay for their internet service. Soon you are going to have much too many people who want to stream movies. They are going to be reluctant to do so when their ISP starts charging extra for every MB over their cap. But now they will have already paid for a subscription that they probably feel they are not getting the most out of. Watching a movie should only involve changing hands with one retailer. With this setup, you have to pay for XBL gold, then pay for a netflix subscription, and then possibly in the future pay more for the additional bandwidth usage (how high is the quality of the stream - how high of a quality are people going to expect as more and more invest in HD setups?). Streaming video seems to be where everything is going because more and more businesses feel they can dip their fingers in a consumers wallet. So like sharks to the chum, EVERYONE is now trying to get in on it. Nothing against MS. Just taking a step back and trying to see the overall picture. The bottleneck here seems to be how much people are will to embrace it once they realize the end cost. |

So say if you and 3 guys in seperate houses wanted to watch a movie you could all do it at the same time. Im assuming that only the person who bought the flick has control over it though. Regardless, very neat.

Comment by: grkblood (Jul 16, 2008 15:18) I wasnt aware that netflix already offered video streams since I don't use netflix. Since they do offer streams is there any other advantage to using netflix on the 360 other than the group viewings? |
