Microsoft finally allows license transfer for Xbox 360vurbal @ Jun 27, 2008 14:00 | 26 comments
With the introduction of a new DRM transfer tool Microsoft has finally made that possible. A PC is required to initiate the transfer online, after which you can connect to Xbox Live with a new hard drive in your Xbox (or with a Xbox) and download the licenses.
Movie licenses still can't be transferred, so you'll want to make sure and watch any titles you've rented before swapping hard drives.
You can find more information about the process, including a video demonstrating the process, on Microsoft's website. |

I don't have to re-download anything yet, since my X360 is running pretty smoothly (got the RRoD on the first one, but didn't install anything on it, since it failed me within a month of purchase). Damn, now this is anti-consumerism! |
Comment by: bdoggie08 (Jun 27, 2008 16:39) where's nobrainer with his fanboyish anti-consumer comments, Oh wait..that's only with Sony. Oh my bad..anyone else is ok to commit that stuff. |
Comment by: nobrainer (Jun 27, 2008 16:44) well is suppose this is good news for xbox owners but only once a year, the movies transfer is still being blocked by the MPAA wanting multiple purchases of films/rentals.

Comment by: bdoggie08 (Jun 27, 2008 16:47) ohhhh...there he is..but wait..no Microsoft or Xbox fanboyish comments here...makes ya think.....

The very first words are "Xbox users have been able to move data from one hard drive to another for some time". You don't have to redownload. The guy you quoted pulled that out of thin air and I can already see people responding to it even though it'd be clear the guy was pulling this info out of his arse if you even read the first article.

But at least they don't charge 100€ for a 120GB hard drive, and make file transfer from HD to another without problems nearly impossible. DRM can always be cracked, but no way I'm paying 100€ for a half-decent hard drive, 70€ for wireless network, 15€ for 2 pairs of rechargeable batteries for the controller, and only Bill Gates knows what for shipping your Xbox back to get it repaired after RRoD.
My hands are frozen, my mind is at the edge of madness
Oh how many nights and days, I've been lost in this land of sadness |

That is, if i pay for a game from the Live then i should be able to download it again (at least few tries like PSN) if i happen to lose it (back it up is cool, but i don't do it very often, hey, can you backup the X360's hdd?)

Comment by: susieqbbb (Jun 27, 2008 18:01) Here is even a worse problem with this.

Comment by: nobrainer (Jun 27, 2008 18:19) Originally posted by susieqbbb: this is exactly why all DRM'ed content should be boycotted until they give us rights to do whatever we want with media we purchase, the only restriction should be do not re-distribute it, but global price fixing and reselling multiple licences is a great business practice, as is selling of mods at extortionate rates now, thanks to this generation of consoles.

Comment by: johnflash (Jun 27, 2008 18:26) stupid advertisement, i hate spam. Thought this wasn't allowed on aD. |

Comment by: SProdigy (Jun 27, 2008 19:23) Even though purchases are still tied to an individual console, the Wii at least allows multiple (unlimited) downloads of purchased content. If it were more mature, where you have an account as in Xbox Live, then it would be better.

Comment by: Gnawnivek (Jun 27, 2008 19:36) Originally posted by SProdigy: thanks for the info, i didn't know there was a transfer cradle... So basically they do have a way to upgrade your hdds completely and painlessly, but only once? So, if i mess up (i'm not good with computers and stuffs, even hooking up HDMI took me two tries), then what? Anyhow, i'm still glad that now you can do this the better way, b/c MS says so, should i applaud for the remedy? Nah, i suppose to be able to do that! Oh, wait, didn't the article said that the process is not 100%? Not good enough... |
Comment by: windsong (Jun 27, 2008 21:01) Better to have a high end PC and move anything anywhere rather than wait on Bill Gates to "authorize" you every time you want to break wind (in between waiting for your "BOX" from Microsoft) |
Comment by: Oner (Jun 27, 2008 21:12) Originally posted by SProdigy: Exactly. Just because a company has a service that may have some sort of DRM, timed period or limited use on extra tech devices does not mean you cannot find another viable option. Why make a big deal out of it? Move on to another service that fits your needs and that is it. I mean seriously, a company that is offering a service wants to protect their investment, invention/service...sounds crazy huh? That is BUSINESS. ![]() Search > http://forums.afterdawn.com/search Rules > http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/2487 Important Rule > http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/380660 |
Comment by: grkblood (Jun 27, 2008 21:23) someone buy nobrainer a snow cone. seriously though, it does suck with whats been building up the past few months. I just know when I read any news article I already know the comments are going to be from nobrainer and someone arguing with him. Ive done it quite a few times myself. Everyone has an opinion so what do you expect really. It just really hard to talk about something without it turning into a debate or a roast. It sucks it has to be this way but what can you really do? I guess thats the great thing about America, freedom of speech.

Then later complain as if a mod is picking on them when they are violating a couple forum rules that we enforce! The point is you can speak what is on your mind but to spam EVERY thread with the same rhetoric gets old and turns members off/away from wanting to contribute & participate and that is not what aD is about.

Comment by: johnflash (Jun 30, 2008 17:19) why is there spam? or is this a joke of some sort?? But anyways, I will say that the 360 has really sweet games, but the system sucks. I like the PS3 system, its built better, but the games are lacking as of now. I know that PS3 will start getting more games out, after Metal Gear they now know the capability of gaming. |
