DVDBack23 @ Dec 04, 2007 23:09 | 6 comments

Microsoft has finally announced that the European launch of Video Marketplace on Xbox Live will take place on December 11th.

The service, for those not familiar, allows users to rent movies in Standard Definition and High Definition for about 250 Microsoft points each. That is the equivalent of GBP 2.13 / EUR 2.91 for standard definition films and 380 MS Points, GBP 3.23 / EUR 4.42 for high definition versions.

After December 11th, the service will be available in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France and Germany. There is however, a catch. The films are only usable for 14 days after download or for 24 hours after the first viewing.

Why they are only for 14 days ? This doesnt make sense , i go rented for much cheaper without wasting my download limit

How large are the files going to be for HD movies? I'm with AOL and probably downloading a couple of these movies would alert them to 'high usage' and they will throttle my speed in the evenings like they have done to lots of other people I know. Can't win :(

If its like the use , HD movies are between 6 or 7 GB

Wow that's a bit big. I'm only on 2mb so would take most of the day to download a film. I'd rather rent it. think it's pretty much the same price from blockbuster anyway.

I guess this feature wouldn't be very useful unless you have a 120gb hdd then.

Frankly without the bigger HDD this is useless for your average 360. Plus in the UK our BB services just aren't up to it. The speeds are FAR too slow you would have to leave the 360 on over night to download a single film and with the death rate of 360's that doesn't sound like the best plan!
Then of course there is the 'Fair Use Policy' attached to many of the BB packages. Even the so called 'high bandwidth' packages lots provide only allow for 10GB/month. Although some of the other packages such as BT Unlimited, Nildram or Sky Unlimited could be ok :)

One good point though, I think the pricing is pretty good even if the idea is 3 or 4 years premature over here!

Not exactly what i would call the best line up of movie choices maybe thats the reason why Microsoft only gives 14 days.
