Taking its turn in the everlasting war against hackers, Sony has updated the firmware of the PSP to version 3.51 after 3.50 was recently discovered to be hacked.

Hackers found a way to exploit firmware version 3.50 using the game Lumines. According to PSPupdates.com and our own users here, if you have a legitimate copy of Lumines then the exploit is very easy. Unzip a few files onto your Memory Stick in a certain directory and then hold Start at a certain point during the first loading screen of the game and that is all.

The newest version, 3.51 does not include any other changes helpful to the PSP, so the update was made specifically to block hackers from downgrading using 3.50.

In an funny turn, sales of Lumines increased drastically after the exploit was announced just as sales of GTA: Liberty City Stories did when the PSP exploit for the game was discovered.

Like everyone else say here its all a matter of time. The smart thing that Sony did was the fact that you can't downgrade after you upgrade. But in saying that there will be a glitch somewhere and it will be found soon enough.

has it ever occurred to any of the hackers that they should keep their found exploit secret so then sony will release exploitable firmware after exploitable firmware and then when the psp is discontiued the homebrew comunity has a known exploit so then all psp's can play homebrew in the end

well after much expirementing i got my friends 3.51 firmware hacked.i dont know if its legal to tell you what i did so i'll keep it to myself for now.will relese a tutorial.

Firmwares will always be exploited right? There's always a new threat to security and so on, so they are never perfect... Yay hackers :)

what do you mean hackers. dont tell me that sombody has linked to the file and when sombody downloads it of the web they can hack into there computers and stuff.

i dont mind hosting the file as i have the file and i havnt been hacked

Let's get this straight...

PSP hacking doesn't involve hacking into anybody's PCs or taking over the world like that! The only concern at the $ony headquarters is that people might actually want to use the PSP for other purposes apart from playing software that is approved by them alone.

Yes I know about the copyright issues and and all that, but really, there are some excellent homebrew apps out there for the PSP and it makes an exciting change to see an up-and-coming programmer design an app or a game that's perhaps a little simpler than the million dollar games that the big producers churn out.

$ony will no doubt argue that the PSP was designed specifically for their games and that they originally sold the consoles at a loss to hopefully reap the rewards of the games sales afterwards. However, as already pointed out, these consoles once purchased, actually belong to the user (Even with all the intellectual property stuff) and not the manufacturer. Such an anti-competitive move will surely cause more resentment amongst users and is almost certain to encourage the aforementioned hackers to raise their game somewhat.
