60 percent of GTA IV sales were for Xbox 360?

DVDBack23 @ May 08, 2008 22:36 | 58 comments

After Take-Two announced that the blockbuster hit GTA IV had hit $500 million USD in sales for its first week, Microsoft was quick to release data alleging that over 60 percent of those sales were for the Xbox 360 console and not the rival PlayStation 3.

The software maker claimed that 3.75 million copies of the 6 million sold worldwide in the first week were for the Xbox 360 console and even added that the games helped push 360 sales 54 percent week-on-week, a gigantic surge.

Microsoft also noted that in the UK retailers were reporting "a strong attach rate between the game and console sales", claiming that at least 40 percent of new console sales were selling with a copy of the hit game.

"Grand Theft Auto IV has done phenomenally well this week with Xbox 360 version outselling PS3 in our stores," said Gerry Berkley, trading manager at Woolworths.

"Xbox 360 console sales have seen a big uplift off the back of Grand Theft Auto IV launching. It's clear our customers see Xbox 360 as a great console for this incredible game."

According to data by Chart-Track in the UK, GTA IV led the software sales charts selling about 927,000 copies. The next closest game, Wii's hit Wii Fit sold 103,000 copies for the week.

... Only as an instant gratification-type purchase (and assuming your 360 still works), after you are tired with the game and realize you own a piece of hardware that is struggling to keep up with the times.. even after all the add-ons that would bring it to a "compareable" level with the PS3.

Well currently,at this time, the date is May 12, 2008 and at this time Xbox 360 does not struggle to keep up with the PS3 and there are no add-ons needed.

Rockstar will release downloadable content for PS3 as well.

Please post a few links to support this. If you have seen or read it online you should have no problem posting a few links to support this. Otherwise I will believe what i have read at various sites and post on numerous websites. You can search and find the "exclusive" talk for GTA IV on Xbox 360. So why no supported truth that PS3 will get the downloable content later???.....

As well as the metal gear solid that is soon to be released and the exclusive talk, yeah it will sell consoles I am sure and man i can honestly say i loved the last edition on ps2, i cant lie about that man. But PS3 is due to have some exclusives released and they need a lot more. Xbox 360 has had plenty exclusives that are highly rated in reviews. I can tell you this though, I wish Microsoft had Hot Shots golf. I have always been a huge fan and Tiger Woods golf is just not as fun to me. PS3 has many exclusives that are due to be released this year and they are some heavy weights at that but we will have to wait and see what happens with the tides. Honestly i think this year will be a great battle between the next-gen consoles. PS3 will pull ahead of all competion once the two kings of games are released on the PS3 but that is so far away. The two games i think will have the biggest impact for PS3 are SOCUM 3, and God of War 3. Socums online poularity in the past has been unmatched and the last God of War was acually a contender for game of the year. That is hard to believe since it is not on one of the next-gen system so go ahead and flex some muscle PS2. LOL. This should be proof to all that say "oh grapics on ps3 are better, No graphics on xbox 360 are better" that graphics dont make a game great they are just icing on the cake. I do love cake though, so go figure.

It sounds as though you know your consoles.. but maybe google was difficult. My support? Heres just a couple links:

If the 360 isn't struggling... then explain the hardware failure rate as a positive thing. When my 360 fried.. and then my refurb.... I honestly would have had far less euphemismically pleasing verbs to use for the console than "struggling". Now, I understand that the failure rate has been cut almost in half by the falcon chip, but I honestly can rattle off many features the 360 struggles with that the PS3 does out of box. I'm not even talking about the unneccecary 100$ wireless adapter either. I'm talking more about the USB port the adapter plugs into that has restrictions put on it that force you to buy the crappy proprietary HDD's to soak up all the "dowloadable content" that you will have to eventually delete your other files (demos, music, video, etc.) to be able to utilize. I'm talking about a fan that is louder than my old windows 95 machine I donated to goodwill, thus making it the LOUDEST dvd/HD-dvd player available. I'm talking about the HDMI port that wasnt even originally designed to be on the machine, and yet anyone who has compared HDMI to Component cables knows the difference.. and also the fact that it only supports HDMI 1.2 as opposed to the latest 1.3 .... oh, here's the source for that if you haven't been able to find the time to google it:

Although the Premium package does include an HDMI 1.2 output, it does not come with HDMI 1.2 cables

You can compound these issues with the fact that the system uses DVD-9 format discs and developers are running out of compression schemes to make titles fit on these discs (lost odessey anyone???). People will tell you how proud they are to stand up and insert disc 2, but the fact is that Sony thought ahead and won't have to worry about compression till much later... if at all.

Most multi-platform titles store on average 2-3 gigs more on the blu-ray version. I'm tired of having games developed for the weaker system so that they look close to the same on both. It may do wonders fot the Gametrailers jaded comparisons, but it only hinders those who could be experiencing much more on a better console. If you don't agree, I don't blame you. I really can't. The 360 is a BLAST to play when it works. I logged many Halo 3 hours in before I made my switch. I know the library of games is larger, but that doesn't make it better. I still can't believe developers want to port over Vampire Rain! WTF! I'm sure we can both agree that game was a joke at best.

I think games should be developed individually for consoles. If GTA had been specially developed for the PS3, it would have blown minds the way Uncharted did on a technical level. Even if you could strip Uncharted down to fit on a DVD-9, the 360 would still lack the processors needed to make that game what it is on the PS3. Naughty Dog developers even said the game would be "much different" on the 360.

Then they clearly only wish to have a console that is riddled with problems if in fact they are not ignorant of the situation. .... or maybe their frathouse really likes Halo 3.

(I know the last link is to a forum post but the guys info comes
straight out of a Playstation Magazine)

I have seen commercials for GTA IV before but only untill a few minutes ago did i see one that ended with the following:

"Download exclusive episodes on Xbox LIVE starting Fall 2008"

Now the definition of the word EXCLUSIVEin my book doesnot mean that it will be released initially on Xbox 360 and then later on PS3.

Anyone else seen this commercial yet? I thought i was tripping at first but then i thought, you have a DVR, so i rewinded and paused the commercial to confirm. Now all you who say that PS3 will get DLC too are correct. I apoligize. But the DLC for the PS3 will be avatars and things that will be utilized in PS3's HOME when it is released, PS3 will not see the DLC that will have the two additional episodes. Sony themselves even confirms this. (Check the links) That particular DLC is for XBOX360 owners only. So i guess both will get DLC after all but PS3 will be getting the DLC with the new episodes. Common sense should have told people that Microsoft didnot pay all that money only for a temporary exclusive. It wouldnot make sense if you think about their gains and loses if that were true. Now i can say again. Xbox360 version is the version to buy. I only feel sorry for those who bought the PS3 version, who happen to have both consoles. They have been misled by people posting who only had half the story and dont know what they are talking about. I guess their only aurgument now will be the issue with the RROD since they have been proven wrong.

DLC for PS3 = related to PS3's upcoming "HOME"
DLC for Xbox 360 = two new episodes

I agree with the sony guy,in the end will Microsoft make up for all that money with that exclusice DLC? $50 million is a lot of money.

Ryu77 full well knows that the content is exclusive and still valid, check his previous posts. don't rise to the behaviour lxhotboy.

so is there any news on just how much this sony themed home space will actually cost seems it is just virtual eye candy and not a playable game?

home = throw your money away purchasing useless graphics that isn't even a playable game, and to top it all sony are selling ALL your details on to advertisers! i think that the top scammers at sony have watched Futurama, Bender's Big Score recently and are using their spongers to ...........

Both versions of GTA IV are excellent and recieve basically the same scores. Im not going to resort to name calling and other stupidity b/c it aint that serious but just wait till someone really immature replyies to this post and then we will have something to laugh about.
I dont know about the Home thing. It could turn out to be a huge success if sony puts the effort into "HOME" and tries to fix its limited online features, it could put significant pressure on Xbox live. Especially when i am not too thrilled to pay for Xbox live. It is great but being a PS2 supporter for a long time, i believe it should be free. If sony can provide access for free then why cant Microsoft. They are just greedy and i guess i am just stupid. J.D Rockafeller was the richest man to ever live. He actually had less money but with inflation taken into consideration he was actually richer than Bill Gates is today. Micrsoft already makes enough money, i am using windows vista right now. LOL they need to declare windows software a monopoly.

NPD data would suggest that the 360 sold more copies than the 360 of gta, almost a 2 to 1 margin by the 360, maybe because of the exclusive missions to be added at a later date or maybe because the 360 version is running at 720p HD resolution, while the PS3 has been released at 640 resolution and dogged by glitches, who knows but the data is here for april.

Nintendo Wii outsells 360, PS3, PS2, PSP combined in April

Originally posted by link:

The NPD console sales numbers have been released for April, stuffed with fascinating content. How did the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Grand Theft Auto stack up against each other? Did Mario Kart Wii sell as many copies as expected? Will Nintendo continue its winning streak?

Before we break things down by company, it's important to point out that the games industry is still going strong. "The industry continues to set a blistering sales pace, and now shows a year-to-date increase of 31 percent over last year's record-setting revenues," NPD Group's Anita Frazier said.
Nintendo

Surprising absolutely no one, Nintendo took the number one and two slots in hardware sales. The Wii sold 714,200 units while the Nintendo DS moved 414,800 units (third place sales go to the PSP with 192,700 units). This month the Wii outsold the Playstation 2, PlayStation 3, PSP, and Xbox 360... combined.

While Grand Theft Auto IV took up the first (360) and third (PS3) slots in software sales, Mario Kart Wii came in number two with 1.12 million units sold in April. Frazier calls it "a classic example of counter-programming." Wii Play came in number four with 360,000 units sold, Super Smash Bros. Brawl came in at number five with 326,000 units, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Time came in at numbers seven and eight, with both games selling 202,000 units. Guitar Hero III took the number nine slot with 152,000 units. All told, Nintendo games took up six of the top ten games for April.

Microsoft may choose to say that it's not competing with Nintendo, and that's probably a smart move. No one is even coming close to matching these sales numbers.
Microsoft

The Xbox 360 did outsell the PS3 with 188,000 units sold, but it only led by 900 units against the PlayStation 3. The 360 also had the best-selling game with Grand Theft Auto IV selling (1.85 million units) and the tenth best selling game with Call of Duty 4 (141,000 units).

Sony has already begun to take some of the shine out of Microsoft's Grand Theft Auto IV win. "There's a larger installed base right now on Xbox 360 than on PS3. So it's not surprising that there's going to be more selling on Xbox 360 than PS3. Having said that, we're really excited about the ratio," PlayStation senior vice president of marketing Peter Dille told N'Gai Croal. "If I had an installed base advantage of 3-1, I wouldn't be crowing too much about a 60-40 sales advantage."

Microsoft added a note about its online play in its reactions to the sales numbers. "Gamers eager to experience Grand Theft Auto IV online helped boost Xbox LIVE global membership totals to over 12 million this month... the Xbox LIVE service has doubled in membership in only one year's time." Microsoft also brought up the exclusive downloadable content coming to the 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV.
Sony

As we've already noted, the PlayStation 3 came within 900 units of the Xbox 360 sales for April; the system moved 187,100 units in total. The PlayStation Portable moved 192,700 units to come in third place behind the monster that is Nintendo, and the PlayStation 2 saw quite the sales slip as it only moved 124,400 units in April. (In March, the classic system moved 216,000 units.)

Sony had two entries in the top ten games list. The PS3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV came in at number three with 1 million units sold and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue took the sixth slot with 224,000 units sold.

Hardware in general didn't see the bump that many expected. Anita Frazier has a few thoughts on why. "It was surprising not to see bigger hardware sales for the Xbox 360 and the PS3 given the release of GTA IV. However, since the game was only in the market for 5 days during this reporting period, that sales lift could very well be evident in May data."

It's hard to imagine a time when Microsoft or Sony are able to make any headway against Nintendo's impenetrable hold on this generation, but the race for number three behind the Nintendo Wii and DS continues.

maybe because the 360 version is running at 720p HD resolution, while the PS3 has been released at 640 resolution

I thought the Xbox360 ran at 720p/1080i/1080p. At least that is what is on the back of the game case. Once it gets out and more people realize that the Xbox version has the exclusive two episodes I expect the sales number to rise even more for xbox360.
