No 80GB or direct price cuts for PS3 in Europe

Sony has announced that they will not be dropping the price of the 60GB model for European customers nor will they be releasing the 80GB model in Europe. Instead, the company will offer the console bundled with two games and an extra Sixaxis controller for the price of EUR 600.

Although the recent price cut for North American models has helped boost sales, Sony Europe decided it would be better to bundle than adjust the price. The combined MSRP of the titles and the extra controller is over EUR 100.

The new "Starter Pack" will go on sale in the UK on July 18th and in the rest of Europe on August 1st. Besides the extra controller, customers can choose two titles from a list of five that include Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm, Genji: Days of the Blade, Formula One Championship Edition and Ridge Racer 7.

"With sell through of over 1.2 million units in the SCEE territories to date, PlayStation 3 has proved to be an instant and huge success," said David Reeves, president of SCEE.

About £400? Sounds about right. Most places are selling for £399 at the moment but I think the rrp is supposed to be £425.

Yeah, there's a bunch of old 60gb stock to shift and Europe comes about last on the pecking order for this stuff.

......and if you pretend its not coming it might even work up a little 'desire' from those who can't see the way they try and 'create demand' for these things.

They're ditching the 60gb version so sooner or later the 80gb version will be here.

Either way they'll still be grossly over-priced, selling slowly and hugely under-shooting their original sales forecasts.

well to be honest i think sony should make a new ps3 because this one is sh!t and too much over priced if it was around £300 i migt just stretch myself to buying one

They are trying to ditch the current six axis controller for the "so it last generation" rumble one that will be coming out. Basically they are getting rid of the scrapes bad deal.

Why all the theatrics over the price? If you can't afford one, buy a 360 and enjoy that, it's a great console, but give the rest of us a break, we're sick of listening to teeny/broke ass dole bludgers whinging about the price.

It's new technology, which is obvious in the fact that even though they're not able to utilise the hardware to it's fullest yet (read it's complicated), the 1st gen games are at least on par with 2nd year 360 titles.

I own an xbox, but i'm definately going to be buying one of these eventually, and yes, if that means putting $50 out of my pay each week until i can get one then so be it. At that rate it will have dropped regardless, xmas sales etc.

Just give the rest of us a break please, fanboyism is retarded, and reserved for 11 year olds.

Actually it doesn't sound that bad to be honest the bundle instead of the price cut,because when I bought the PS3 about 5 months ago or so.I still ended up buying games for it,and the games listed aren't really that bad.I think Resistance is one of the best games you can probably get at the moment,and I haven't messed with it yet but Motorstorm is suppose to be pretty good also.I think the people in Europe are going to get a better deal in the long run to be honest.The 80Gig harddrive doesn't really excite me,because you can get a harddrive and upgrade the storage as much as you want.I think Sony needs a better game selection,but besides that they have a good system.I think all the next gen consoles are getting better,but I still am having problems getting a Nintendo Wii which seems to be impossible to get in my area.I plan on waiting for the 360 elite to drop in price,and I heard from alot of people if you get the regular 360 you need to buy the addon fan so it doesn't overheat.I would like to just wait and get the Xbox 360 system when all the bugs are fixed with the new rebuild.

I own a 360 and have had it since it came out on release, no u dont need to buy an extra fan of u treat it right, when i say treat it right i mean to have it in a well ventalated are and not have the back of the 360 close to a wall, dont pile dvd players ps3s etc on top of it and and nothing close to it on the sides, make sure all the vents on 360 are clear, have the 360 on a hard surface NOT a carpet and put the power brick on a hard surface (DEFFINATLEY NOT A CARPET) also making sure that is in an open area and all the vents are clear and the brick is the correct way up, doing all of this ensures the full life out of your 360.

Dude, the 360 has hardware problems. Everyone knows that. MS knows that. All of those little steps you mentioned are pointless for most people (the ones that fall into the small percentage of 360 owners with "good" consoles). You can fry an egg on the GPU. Most people probably can't meet all of requirements any way. And if those were the solutions, MS would probably have listed them on a warning disclaimer or something. But then again, people would probably have laughed it off and thought they were screwy. I mean, why would someone spend $500+ on a system that says "you can't operate on a carpet and you have to provide the ventilation."

Everyone knows the XBox 360 has had it's problems but pretending that it's a majority that has been affected is just either ignorance or lying.

Even the 30% claim is just anecdotal (from 2 widely quoted game shop sources) and hardly 'factual'.

That's a different topic alltogether (which we had our differences on a week or two ago hughjars :-) ). And it wasn't the main point of my comment.

- Sorry but I'd call it weird to imagine that you should be using any kind of electrical gear like this 'on carpet' (especially not $500+ kit).

Surely everyone understands the implications for cooling by now?

I wouldn't even let my SD DVD player sit on the carpet/rug.

Are you serious? In that case why would Microsoft give a extra 3 year warranty I don't know about you but if they give you a warranty for that long it show that the failure rate was very high.So high they down played it for a long time until they was pressure to act.Company's don't give out a Billion dollar warranty program for the hell of it unless there is a serious problem.This is the second time M$ adjust there warranty on the 360 so what does that tell you?

Everyone??? You're making an assumption about what people know and undertand. One that a manufacturer of a gaming system, of all things, should not be making.

I'm not pretending. I'm choosing to believe the high end rather than the low end, based on personal experience and of those around me, numerous articles and statements from a few store managers I've asked.

Anyway, Adam_16's statement implied that the 360 does not need extra cooling. You may have your opinions about the return rate, but the fact that the 360 needs additional cooling is absolute.

To give confidence to potential new buyers and to reassure the existing owner-base?

Coupled with the revised heat-sink arrangements it is pretty clear that they are serious about resolving these problems.

Irrespective of how you are clearly determined to try and spin this the fact is that they ended up doing the right thing.

Their guarantee covers every Xbox sold since day 1 (provided it was not messed with or sold on......so that's the same as almost anybodies' guarantee) and it lasts 3 whole years.

3 year guarantees ought to be welcomed.
They ought to be welcomed as a standard that really ought to apply across the board.
Companies should stand by their expensive products for more than 1 year only (and the not unusual 90 days in the USA is especially lame).
Perhaps that is the real problem there, members of the rival companies fanclub have to try and bash this somehow cos it makes their current 1 year deal look thin and weak.

It turns out that they are not dropping 360 product from their shops.

The units removed from shelves were 'premium 360's only; which has led game journalists to conclude that it's a problem with a specific batch of hard drives

Still, I guess with so little positive PS3 news around the Sony PR effort is playing up every 'the XBox 360 is evil and will explode & kill your children' story that they can.

- Well OK, I do not own an XBox 360 (nor the 1st version either) but I am pretty certain that the manuals and information supplied is similar to just about every other similar electrical product and is full of warnings about ventilation and not blocking vents and grills and which does mention specifically things like carpets.

If my DVD player does this then I'm pretty sure the XBox will too.

Now OK, if people refuse to read or abide by the advice and the operating instructions then I don't think the company is to blame.

- Well you can choose what you prefer to believe but like I said that 30% figure is from 2 sources (one of which IIRC is from EB which is kind of interesting given the 'news' story quoted above).

No-one knows what the true failure rate of anyone's products are......and I can tell you a store owner I know has 8 PS3s out of a batch of 20 awaiting return.

They have afterall totally revamped the heat-sink arrangements for existing units.
They are also shifting to a much cooler running 65nm CPU & GPU in a couple of months.

Well at the end of the day you wouldnt buy an expensive car and park it in mud and treat it like sh*t would ya, jus lookin after the console makes it last, i mean 5 of my freinds tht have an xbox 360 all work and havnt had 1 problem with it, they treat theres well leavin all the vent problems etc, its just all those noobs tht put things ontop of the 360 move the position wen its switched on, its an expensive delecate peice of hardware if you wanna chuck summit around n treat it like crap hire a hooker or summit..
